Cornelia is 60 years old and deeply unhappy: her son Barbu strives to be independent. He moved out, has his own car, a girlfriend - who obviously doesn't live up to Cornelia's standards - and he avoids his mother as much as possible. When Cornelia finds out that Barbu was involved in a tragic accident, her maternal instincts take control. She makes use of all her capabilities, her well-connected friends and her money to save her son who faces a heavy prison sentence. In exchange, Cornelia expects Barbu to become again the dependent child he used to be, which does not seem very difficult, given the difficult situation he goes through. The border between maternal love and manipulation is very thin though.
Child's Pose is a film about the pathological mother-son relationship and about the influence parents have on the personality of their child. At the same time, it depicts contemporary Romanian society and its basic institutions eroded by fraud and corruption.
The film was awarded the Golden Bear at Berlinale 2013.
