Lora, a 17-year-old girl, is living in a small Bulgarian village where time seems to stand still and old traditions and habits are taken for granted. After her father dies, her family and the villagers expect her to give herself over to grief, wearing a special scarf as a sign of mourning (zhaleika), refrain from listening to music, and so on. She is even expected to play the role of an orphan. All this is very difficult for a teenage girl, who wants to keep on enjoying her youth and live a normal life. Is she capable of disregarding the traditions and judgements that her family and the villagers are imposing on her? This family drama is a debut feature of the Bulgarian director Eliza Petkova resulting from a common project of the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB) and the new Bulgarian University. The film had its premiere at this year’s Berlinale, and received a Special Mention.
