A waitress in a secluded fast food joint observes funny and sad human interactions on her last day at work, questioning her own life decisions. It is an ordinary autumn day, with only a few people entering the restaurant, but all of them are in the middle of a crisis in their souls and in the world around them. The End of The Chain is a quirky existentialist comedy with a very specific sense of humour and attention to detail, portraying the unwavering wish to find stability in life and feel understood by others. Amidst the most ordinary of settings, a burger joint in a modern city without necessarily a name, deep topics spiced up with nuanced humour arise while some of the characters who are on the verge of a breakdown perhaps turn out to be on the verge of a breakthrough. The burger joint itself is a central character in the film - the place where all interactions happen, unfolding all the absurdity of the human condition within its four walls. The End of The Chain is based on a theatre play by Estonian poet, theatre writer and director Paavo Piik. The film, which premiered at the Karlovy Vary film festival this summer, is Priit Pääsuke’s entertaining debut feature, which opens up many existential questions about the contemporary urban life we are living.
This film is brought to you by the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival as part of CinEast’s “Carte blanche” programme.
