FOCUS ON UKRAINE

14 October from 18.30 at the Cinémathèque

A special evening dedicated to the country in turmoil. Two screenings providing a closer look at the Ukrainian people and society before the current crisis. With typical Ukrainian snacks and drinks available before and after the films.

In the first part of the evening the audience can enjoy the light-hearted comedy Business As Usual by the prominent director Valentin Vasyanovych about a psychotherapist who decides to quit his job to become a full-time poet... not really a wise idea these days, especially when he has to face the Ukrainian reality that he hadn't noticed before.
The second screening will play on a more serious note with the short film collection Ukraine Goodbye! presenting six films by some of the most promising young Ukrainian directors. This is a taste of a broader community project involving over 500 film professionals. Initiated as a project about emigration, the project eventually developed into a statement of a generation of new Ukrainian film-makers about contemporary Ukraine and Ukrainians. Including the award-winning short film Nuclear Waste by Myroslav Slaboshpitskyy.

The evening is co-organised by the association LUkraine asbl.

CinEast's focus on Ukraine, however, does not end with the special evening described above. The Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa heads the festival's jury, he will give a masterclass about documentary filmmaking and will also present his latest documentary film Maidan, depicting the Ukrainian revolution of the past winter. Moreover, photos from Ukraine taken this summer by Luxembourgish photographer Syl Geyer will be presented in the framework of the festival's photography exhibition So Far So Close. And finally, the Ukrainian band Zapaska will play live at CinEast's closing event at Sang&Klang on 25 October

So come and explore Ukraine with CinEast.
