A tribute to the Lithuanian experimental filmmaker Jonas Mekas

Jonas Mekas, Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania (1972)

Twenty-seven years after having to flee Lithuania, filmmaker Jonas Mekas and his brother Adolfas return to their birthplace in Lithuania. After being interned in a labour camp in Germany, they acquired the status of ‘Displaced Persons’, a trauma that they address in most of their work since their emigration to New York City in 1949.

The documentary’s first part depicts their early years in the US. The second part was shot in Lithuania in 1971, seen through the memories of a displaced person coming home after a quarter of a century. The third part begins in Elmshorn (where the brothers were interned in a labour camp) and ends, after encounters with friends such as Peter Kubelka in Vienna, with footage of the burning of the Vienna fruit market.

After the screening, the researcher and art critic Benjamin Léon will talk about Mekas' work.
