Stephan Komandarev

Stephan Komandarev is the director and producer of one of the most successful Bulgarian films in recent history, Светът е голям и спасение дебне отвсякъде (The World is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner, 2008) which was the first Bulgarian film shortlisted for the 2010 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the most widely released Bulgarian film to date, scooping up 35 awards at international film festivals. Komandarev is a documentary and feature film director, screenwriter and producer, born in 1966 in Sofia, who graduated in Film and TV Directing at the New Bulgarian University in 1998. He founded his production company, Argo Film, a year later. Another one of his award-winning films is Съдилището (The Judgement, in competition at CinEast 2015), the official Bulgarian submission for the 2016 Academy Awards. He has been a lecturer in the Film Department of the New Bulgarian University since 2008, is a 2011 EAVE graduate, Member of the Bulgarian Film Director’s Association and Film Producer’s Association, as well as a Member of the European Film Academy. Komandarev attended Cannes 2016 as co-producer of Bogdan Mirica’s Câini (Dogs, CinEast 2016) which won the FIPRESCI Prize in Un Certain Regard. His latest feature, the road film Посоки (Directions, 2017) premiered in Cannes 2017 – Un Certain Regard section.
