OPENING EVENT with YAGODY (UA) and CHARAN-PO-RANTAN (JP) live & DJ KimSka
Saturday 7 October from 19.30
Melusina (tickets)
Enchanting folk music band from the Ukrainian Carpathians opens this year’s CinEast festival as part of our Focus on Ukraine
‘A song fits every moment in a person's life’, says Zoriana Dybovska, who founded Yagody in 2016 with three other students from the theatre faculty in Lviv, western Ukraine. The four travelled through all the oblasts of Ukraine to explore the musical traditions of local people. Amazed by the richness and charm of the vast collection of songs about life, they decided to give some of them new, more modern clothes and… the unique sound of Yagody was born.
When the band was announced at their first gig, the then nameless band was presented spontaneously as ‘Yagody', meaning 'berries', and the name stuck. Since then, the band comprising Zoriana Dybovska (vocals, singing bowls), Sofiia Leshyshak (vocals, djembe), Nadiia Parashchuk (vocals, bayan) and Tetiana Voitiv (vocals, bayan) as well as guest musicians on drums, guitar, accordion, dulcimer or the drymba, a Jewish harp from the Carpathians, have performed on many stages in Ukraine and around Europe. Since Yagody is active also in the world of theatre, its musical stage shows are planned according to dramaturgical principles - their gig is like a performance in one act, like a ritual. Yagody’s repertoire consists of poetic songs from every corner of Ukraine as well as some surrounding regions, including the Balkans. They invite you to their captivating, energising and diverse world of melodies, rhythms and themes and a truly hypnotic fusion of voices, echoing the songs of our ancestors brought by the winds blowing through the fields.
However, before Yagody we have a special first act - the trio Charan-Po-Rantan from Japan! This is a project of sisters Momo (vocals) and Koharu (accordion), who create a highly peculiar melange of French chanson and Balkan music combined with various international genres, and their colourful, circus-like costumes are able to carry away the masses. This year, the two sisters perform together with drummer Fûchin in a small formation, but by no means with less energy. Be prepared for a very unusual show where CinEast meets the (Far)East.
But that's not all. After the gigs, the night continues with DJ KimSka, armed with more than 25 years of experience in firing up dance floors in Germany and Europe. The Offbeat is in his blood and he’s wired for endless fun on the turntables. He is serving musical happiness weaved from Soviet Disko, Balkan Beats, Electro Swing, and of course Ska! For the first time in Luxembourg, DJ KimSka is ready to inject a good dose of energy to keep you on the dancefloor until the early hours.
During the whole event, a selection of authentic Ukrainian dishes will be available on the first floor of the venue, to fuel up your energy levels.

Cinémathèque (tickets)
The late 1910s will come to life at the Cinémathèque – with an unforgettable experience of image and sound – featuring the silent melodrama ‘Mania’ starring the legend Pola Negri, accompanied live by the Polish band Czerwie
Mania by Eugen Illès is one of the first films ever made with the Poland-born actress. Shot in 1918, this tightly plotted melodrama is an important monument of early film history. Considered as lost, it was discovered in 2006 in the Polish National Film Archives, reconstructed and digitally restored. Among other European silent stars that were plucked from the European film industry and transplanted to Hollywood, Pola Negri was one of the great divas of the silent film era. She often portrayed vamps, courtesans and the mysterious European femme fatale. She rose to become a Hollywood star and had a romance with the greatest comic actor of silent films – Charlie Chaplin.
Pola Negri in her role as cigarette worker Mania is at the centre of a love triangle. Her heart beats for the music composer Hans, but getting in the way is the art patron Morelli, who has a strong influence on Hans’ career. Mania agrees to a deal with Morelli to save Hans’ career and makes a huge sacrifice for love.
The Polish band Czerwie currently consists of four musicians – Wojtek Zaborowski, Maciek Kudłacik, Paweł Zawarus, Piotrek Bogunia – playing a variety of instruments: percussion, xylophone, drums, ethnic instruments, bass, guitar, mandolin, accordion and synthesiser. The group has given over 1000 concerts in Poland and Europe and they are among the leading ensembles playing live music for silent films. For their unmistakable style, the band Czerwie uses unconventional instruments and combines different genres such as pop, rock and ethno.

Skalpel is a duo of DJs/producers, Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudło, from Wroclaw who have been drawing inspiration from the vibrant jazz tradition in Poland and their fascination with the possibilities of new electronics, for over a quarter of a century. As one of the very few Eastern European acts, the duo was signed by the legendary forward-thinking UK label Ninja Tune at the dawn of the millennium, when they released the critically acclaimed albums Skalpel (2004) and Konfusion (2005), now considered classics of “jazztronics”. Armed with excellent reviews in prestigious magazines (NME, The Wire, Pitchfork), the duo has achieved worldwide fame both as producers as well as skillful DJs, performing all around the globe.
In 2014 Skalpel returned with the album Transit that marked a turn from sample-based music into compositions created on virtual instruments. CLOSING EVENT with ÄL JAWALA (DE) and DJ party
Friday 20 October from 19.00
Rotondes (tickets)
Concert & short films & food & DJ
Magical crossover of oriental brass and hypnotic grooves of Äl Jawala & more to close the festival in style!
The evening kicks off with a selection of short movies to prepare the floor for the stars of the night – the Balkan Big Beats band Äl Jawala from Freiburg. A DJ party after the live show will further intensify your journey through countless musical styles and the whole event will be accompanied by a selection of traditional dishes from the Ukrainian kitchen.
The Äl Jawala (meaning “The Travelers” in Arabic) band founded in 2000 was among the first to combine club beats and hip hop with wild, oriental brass. They started touring Europe as street musicians and today – 23 years later – they have over 1000 concerts behind them, including in faraway lands like India, Canada, China or Jordan, and 10 albums. The band sets off fireworks on stage with their unstoppable energy and unique blends of genres, while spreading a lot of positivity. Saxophones, drums, percussions as well as didgeridoo are the cornerstones of the Äl Jawala sound, spiced up with vocals and synths. A truly cosmopolitan sound oscillating between hot Balkan Brass, exotic Arabic elements and relaxed Afrobeats. Sometimes urban and club-oriented, sometimes mysterious, dark and deep, the band serves up a unique mixture of party and concert experience.
The concert will be followed by Gypsy brass punk after party with DJ Kneza.
