While Iva is mourning the loss of her mother who has died in an accident, she discovers her mother's secret relationship with a co-worker, opera conductor Erik. Iva's idea of family starts to fall apart. She pulls away from her father and siblings and starts stalking Erik. This gives her an opportunity to escape pain, and she chooses anger instead. She plunges into a world completely different from the one she is used to, but after the initial disappointment and feelings of betrayal subside, she realises Erik is someone with whom she can share her loss. At this point Iva's brother takes on the anger and desire for revenge himself. We witness the struggle of those who are left behind – people incapable of sharing their loss and connecting to each other in their almost physical pain, who are thus in danger of becoming nothing more than “bodies" of grief - until something is sacrificed and the family is able to reconnect.
