The armed conflicts of the 1990s not only visibly destroyed the land of the former Yugoslavia, but also left the deepest wounds in the memory of each of its nations. There are as many different interpretations of that bleak past as there are countries affected. It is therefore hard to expect absolute harmony when, less than two decades since the war ended, a diverse group of veterans gathers at a remote mountain hotel for a therapy session over several days.
Brilliantly directed and boasting a cast of top Balkan male actors, this captivating drama on the consequences of the civil war in ex-Yugoslavia looks insightfully at masculinity, trauma and prejudice.
Alen Drljević's dramatic debut can serve as a metaphor of the contemporary, divided Balkan society, in urgent need of therapy. But is reconciliation even possible and is there any catharsis coming? World-premiered in Karlovy Vary's Official Competition, the film has since then scooped numerous awards and was selected as Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Oscar candidate.
