DOWN WITH WALLS!

"DOWN WITH WALLS!" (see catalogue)

Neimënster

3-23 October 2019

The photographic exhibition “Down with Walls!” offers a glimpse into the main theme of the festival – the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall – from the contemporary point of view.

The people standing on the Berlin Wall in November 1989 were striving for fraternity and solidarity as much as for liberty and prosperity. But what is left of these dreams today, 30 years later? Which walls still exist in Europe and elsewhere in the world? What are the invisible barriers that separate countries, communities, social groups and people? Do we keep building new walls? Have we learnt to surmount any of them? Has the era of division ended for good ushering in an era of openness? These are some of the questions that guided the curator of the exhibition, Dariusz Trześniowski, in his choice of specific artists and photographs.

The featured projects by Kai Wiedenhöfer (DE), Warren Richardson (AU/UK), Deividas Buivydas (LT), Krzysztof Gołuch (PL), Tommaso Rada (IT) and Zupagrafika (PL) address the following themes: social barriers, social exclusion, disability, the complexity of the world, as well as the perception and representation of borders.
