Inspired by a real-life event, the murder of a 21-year-old Slovak student in 2005, By a Sharp Knife is a noirish political thriller about a desperate fight against the corrosive power of corruption told from the perspective of a bereaved father facing the fact that the perpetrators of the murder are about to be set free. Kuhn´s feature depicting police corruption and the failure to condemn criminals opened in Slovak cinemas exactly one year after the shocking murder of the Slovak investigative journalist Jan Kuciak.
