A film noir replete with playful references to the entire history of cinema, The Whistlers follows a corrupt cop from one of Porumboiu’s previous feature films, placed under surveillance by his colleagues, from Bucharest to the stunning island of La Gomera. Cristi is to learn el silbo, the local whistling language alongside the beautiful Gilda to help the gangsters on both sides of the continent in an escape and to recover loot. Set against a fine musical score, through treason, deception and a host of supporting characters, the storyline takes many unexpected turns, one more scenic than the next.

The movie is Romania’s official Oscar entry in the international feature film category.
