Bogdan, a meticulous and intelligent ambulance driver from Bucharest, takes part in an armed robbery, together with three other men he barely knows. While fleeing the crime scene, Bogdan accidentally runs over a witness, who subsequently ends up in a coma, then dies under suspicious circumstances, an event that will disrupt the very core of his moral being. First remorseful, then simply trying to contain the situation, Bogdan starts a thorough, almost compulsive investigation to dig up the true identities of his accomplices, in a cat-and-mouse game with a powerful and unknown mastermind. Yet the more he digs, the deeper he sinks into a spiral of fear and paranoia that will shake his entire existence.
Despite its premise, which is a heist gone wrong, Boss is a psychological drama that goes through the major noir tropes and turns some on their heads. Thus, the lady in red, Bogdan’s femme fatale, is more of a defenceless doe begging for protection. The moral ambiguity of the characters is supported by the night shots and haunting music. On the verge between fiction, reality and surrealism, this is an atmospheric film that goes far beyond its plot.
