Following on from the Anthropocene, the Eremocene is the Age of Loneliness, characterized by natural destruction, the loss of global biodiversity and the dominance of the technosphere over the biosphere. Cinema is dead, digital technologies have conquered the world, the realm of data is huge and out of control. All that remains of humans are traces that must be laboriously converted back into analogue images.
Using multiple cinematographic techniques (film, digital, 3D) for visual experimentation, this is a playful and illuminating video essay in which the writer-director invents a conversation with her futuristic double from the Eremocene era, asks about the relevance of new technologies to climate change and democracy, and examines the dismal prospects of our digital future.
The film was presented at this year's Berlinale.
