In an isolated mountain village in 19th century Macedonia, a young girl is kidnapped and then transformed into a witch by an ancient spirit. Curious about humans, the young witch accidentally kills a peasant and then takes the peasant’s shape to live life in her skin. Her mission through the ages is to try to find out what it means to be human.
Visually beautiful and evocative, this is an intriguing blend of a folk horror story and an absorbing tale about the restless quest to find oneself through body switching. The episodic structure and elegiac tone soften the violent edges of the horror genre and turn it into an original and transgressive film on the nature of gender and identity.
