A guard on the Soviet-Chinese border in 1973 falls victim to a night-time kung fu attack by Chinese invaders, and, after surviving, he decides to become a monk. To accomplish this inner mission, however, he must prove that he's capable of becoming an enlightened man, and especially resist the allure of Rita, the girl at the local alcohol stand.
An explosive mix of Kung fu fantasy, heavy metal and Eastern Orthodoxy, with glimpses of the gray 1970s’ Soviet reality peeking out from the background, this is a joyfully absurdist, logic-defying scenario. The film is reminiscent of Eastern bloc adolescent daydreaming, in which two parallel universes revolve around each other at slightly different speeds.
The film premiered in the main competition of this year's Locarno Film Festival.
