Magdalena Popławska

Magdalena Popławska is a well-known Polish actress. Working both in cinema and theatre, she’s one of the leading actresses in Krzysztof Warlikowski theatre – Teatr Nowy. She made her film debut in Przemysław Wojcieszek’s A Perfect Afternoon in 2005 and since then has appeared in, among others, The Girl from the Wardrobe by Bodo Kox (CinEast 2013) and Words by Anna Kazejak. This year, we can see her in both Panic Attack by Paweł Maślona and 53 Wars by Ewa Bukowska.

Leon Lučev

Leon Lučev is one of the most popular and talented Croatian actors, debuting this year as film director with his short film I Can Barely Remember the Day, premiered at Locarno IFF and included in our Short Fiction Films Marathon (south). Since his debut in Vinko Brešan's blockbuster comedy How the War Started on My Island (1996), he has played numerous roles, both heroes and villains, in films such as Vegetarian Cannibal (CinEast 2012), Circles (Grand Prix and Audience Award at CinEast 2013), and this year you will see him in The Load (for which he received the Best Actor Award at Sarajevo FF), Men Don't Cry and Ivan.

Șerban Pavlu

Șerban Pavlu is a Romanian actor who has appeared in more than 30 films since 1995. He’s known for his roles in such films as Everybody in Our Family (CinEast 2012), The Japanese Dog and Scarred Hearts (CinEast 2016). He won the Heart of Sarajevo award for his role in Meda or The Not So Bright Side of Things. The CinEast 2018 programme features him in Charleston, Alice T. and “I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians”.

CinEast 2018 also puts the spotlight on animated films produced in the CEE countries that often manage to balance the limited financing possibilities with incredible inventiveness and originality. For the very first time, the festival has selected an animated feature as the opening film – Milorad Krstić’s “animated joyride” Ruben Brandt, Collector. The festival programme also includes a themed ‘Animated Evening’ featuring the Short animated films marathon and the extraordinary film Another Day of Life, which combines animation and documentary sequences. CinEast also invites you to rediscover several animated classics - Le Voyage dans le préhistoire by Karel Zeman and various older cartoons for children.

Focus on Latvia
