Fugue , the eagerly anticipated second feature film by Agnieszka Smoczyńska (her multi-award winning, mesmerizing debut The Lure was presented at CinEast in 2016) that world-premiered in Cannes Critics' Week, is a gripping and stirring portrayal of a woman trying to escape from herself and relations she doesn't accept anymore.
Alicja (brilliantly played by Gabriela Muskała) suffers from memory loss and builds her own free-spirited way of life. Two years later, she returns to her family and unwillingly resumes her role as wife, mother and daughter. Her estranged husband and son do not recognize this woman who looks familiar but behaves like a stranger. Feelings of alienation, love and revelations rekindle her interior flame.
An intriguing, powerful and touching psychological drama about one character trapped within two personalities, Fugue delves into the themes of memory and identity, as well as social roles that can easily blind one to one's own self.
